Harris selects Tim Walz as Vice Presidential Pick for 2024 Campaign
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday that she will run with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. By selecting a plain speaker from the American heartland and a progressive policy advocate, Harris hopes to appeal to white, rural, and rural Americans.
In a text message to supporters on Tuesday, Harris revealed Walz’s choice. Later that day, he will announce a rally in Philadelphia.
According to Harris:
“I’m pleased to share that I’ve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate, Tim is a battle-tested leader with an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign and to the office of the vice president.”
Harris chooses Walz
The goal of Harris’s selection of a plain speaker from the American heartland and a progressive policy advocate is to aid her in winning over rural, white voters in the polls scheduled for November 5.
Before becoming Minnesota’s governor in 2018, Walz, a 60-year-old former teacher and U.S. Army National Guard member was elected to a House of Representatives seat in a Republican-leaning district in 2006. He served in that capacity for 12 years. As governor, Walz has promoted a progressive agenda that includes extended paid leave for Minnesota workers, tax breaks for the middle class, free school lunches, and initiatives to combat climate change.
The choice marks the end of a rigorous, more intense process recently as the Harris team narrowed down the potential candidates and different Democratic Party groups pushed for their choices. Harris interviewed three contenders over the weekend: Walz, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania.
Walz has received less attention on the national scene and is less well-known than some of the other options Harris was considering as running partners. As the leader of the Democratic Governors Association and a governor for a second term, Walz is not from a typical battleground state; Minnesota has only backed a Republican for president once since 1960.
However, Walz’s credentials as a veteran and gun owner who previously served in Congress from a rural, Republican-leaning area of Minnesota may help Harris win over working-class White voters who have shifted their allegiance from the Democratic Party and contributed to the ascent of Donald Trump.
Walz’s impact in three months?
Once it became apparent that Harris was considering Walz for the ticket following Biden’s July 21 announcement that he would not run for reelection, Walz shot to national prominence. In his odd and attention-grabbing cable television appearances, he frequently called Trump and other Republicans “weird.” Other Democrats used a similar attack strategy, and it seemed to prickle some Republicans, who felt obliged to respond.
With around three months till an election that has already been shaken by historic turbulence, Walz now has the pressing responsibility of presenting himself to the nation. One of the political challenges that Trump will face is a debate with Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), whom he selected as his running mate in July.
Tuesday in Philadelphia will be Harris and Walz’s first rally together. This will be the first stop in a four-day tour of battleground states, including stops in Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, and other places.
