StarkWare, the prime developer behind Starknet has declared a collaboration with Informal Systems, the key contributor to the Cosmos Ecosystem.

This partnership plans to bring the IBC connectivity to Starknet in order to allow for connection with other blockchains. This integration will enable Starknet to easily interact with chains in the Cosmos ecosystem and any other chain that implements IBC.

In an official statement, StarkWare emphasized the partnership’s dual objectives:

“This partnership aims to achieve two primary goals for Starknet: improving decentralisation and connectivity.”

To achieve these benefits the integration process will entail exploring the IBC protocol and the Tendermint consensus algorithm.

Enhancing Blockchain Interoperability

The integration of the IBC protocol is a strategic step for StarkWare, which will allow Starknet to connect with other blockchains to a greater extent. Starknet is a permissionless decentralized ZK-Rollup built on Ethereum that uses STARK proofs to achieve high throughput and low fees and is also secure.

Cosmos, on the other hand, is a network of interconnected blockchains built using the Cosmos SDK. Interactions between these chains are enabled by the native IBC protocol, which uses the Tendermint consensus.

Starknet is planned to be connected to any IBC-compatible chain, thus extending the functionality of the protocol and increasing the level of cross-chain cooperation.

Light Client Verification in IBC

One of the key aspects of the IBC protocol is the capability of light client verification. Light clients, on the other hand, do not need to verify the entire state of the counterpart’s blockchain, instead they use cryptographic proofs to authenticate. This helps to facilitate a smooth flow of work between the chains and the process of validating the data is not time-consuming, thus fastening the process of interoperability.

This becomes crucial for Starknet given that the platform aims at expanding its integration with other blockchains while at the same time optimizing for performance and security. StarkWare’s goals of expanding scalability and decreasing transaction costs are best achieved through the light client approach.

StarkWare’s Continued Innovation

That’s why the company continuously works on research and development of new technologies in the sphere of blockchain. In the course of the last year, the company contributed to the ZKThreads framework for fractal scaling, and researched parallel transaction execution and STARKs on Bitcoin. These are some of the measures that show the commitment that StarkWare has towards improving the scalability of blockchains.

Working with Informal Systems and the addition of the IBC protocol is a significant development for the platform that is Starknet.
