A worrying new report, released ahead of this week’s G7 conference, suggests that all of the G7 countries are set to fall far short of the nations’ 1.5°C Paris Agreement limit.

On April 23rd, a new publication by global policy institute Climate Analytics outlined a ‘2024 update’ on how the G7 governments were doing with regards to their agreed-upon targets for the year 2030.

100% failure rate

With the decade almost halfway through, Climate Analytics said that not one of the nations – including United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Germany, France and Italy – were making sufficient progress.

None of the G7 members are on track to meet their existing emission reduction targets for 2030, which are not yet collectively aligned with 1.5°C. Under current policies, the G7 are set to reduce emissions by 19-33% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. This is at best around half of what is needed.”

The consequences of failure

The report also gave some concerning numbers for what could happen in the increasingly likely event that the G7 nations – some of the largest emissions producers on the planet – fail to meet the 2030 targets:

Achieving steeper emissions cuts to 2030 is critical for getting on a path to the G7’s target for net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 at the latest. This is because steep GHG reductions after 2030 would not be able to make up for the sheer amount of greenhouse gases emitted this decade if deep and sustained reductions do not occur before 2030.”

Cutting pollution by 75%

What’s more, the bar is about to get even higher for the G7 countries as well. The same report noted that by next year, 20235, the countries would need to cut greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 75%, compared to 2019 levels, just to stay on target.

The G7 nations are meeting in Turin, Italy, from Sunday this week, for the second G7 2024 Industry Stakeholders Conference.
