The Indian Premiere League (IPL) 2024, which commenced on March 22, sponsored by Tata, is shattering viewership records across all TV channels in India. Established by the BCCI in 2007, the IPL is a men’s Twenty20 cricket league held every year in India. The IPL is officially broadcast on Disney Star. IPL is one of the most viewed events in the world with audiences from all over the globe.

IPL 2024’s record-breaking reach

Disney Star’s live broadcast of the first 18 matches garnered over 400 million viewers. Disney Star also recorded a groundbreaking watch time of 123.8 billion minutes, with the TVR ratings witnessing a 17% increase as compared to 2023.

Within 22 days and 26 games, Star Sports has reported a massive reach of 448 million viewers of IPL 2024 and has also generated 188 billion minutes of watch time. Also, the live broadcast’s total reach has increased by 8% in comparison to the previous year’s TVR growth of 15%.

Audience appeal

Apart from this, the incorporation of Indian Sign Language Feed and AI technology in IPL 2024’s broadcast has received a favourable response, reaching a wider audience integrating inclusivity in the viewership experience. IPL 2024 is also being broadcast in 10 different regional Indian languages across 14 feeds. The introductions of programs such as “Cheeky Singles,” starring Carry Minati into IPL is increasing its appeal even more.

The Head of Disney Star (Sports), Sanjog Gupta said in a PR statement,

“We are overwhelmed with the record-breaking viewing figures for TATA IPL 2024. Disney Star has started the 17th season from where it left off last year, doubling down on fan-centred initiatives that seek to drive passion and fandom for the tournament.”

Who are the players?

The IPL 2024 is played among 10 different teams- Rajasthan Royals (RR), Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Delhi Capitals (DC), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Gujarat Titans (GT), Sunrise Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

As India is expected to announce its team for the Cricket World Cup Tournament, the IPL 2024 is also a platform where Indian squad selectors will choose players for the World Cup based on their performances.
